Manuel Akanji backs Phil Foden to shine in his best Man City role

Manuel Akanji has backed Phil Foden to fill the void left by Kevin de Bruyne's injury at Manchester City.

The Englishman has been touted as a potential replacement for the Belgian international, who could be out until 2024 with a serious injury. Foden's best position has often been debated but De Bruyne's absence has created a vacancy in midfield.

Team-mate Akanji believes it's a role he can perform well. He also discussed his adaptation in the 'John Stones role' against Newcastle, stepping into midfield to give extra protection in possession, in front of the back four.

"I like it, it came as a little bit of a surprise with John Stones’ injury," Akanji told TNT Sports. "I had two or three training sessions in there then I slotted in there for the final.

"Today again, I start to feel pretty confident now. It’s adjusting in this position which is something new but I think it’s like my fifth position that I've played in this team, so I like to learn new things and get better.

"Hopefully it keeps getting better like this. I think Phil is so good, especially in midfield with his back towards goal. The way he turns, moves between the spaces, that’s what we saw again today so hopefully he can keep doing that this season."
