Man and woman rushed to hospital with serious injuries after armed attack

A man and woman were taken to hospital with serious injuries after a terrifying attack The victims were assaulted by an armed attacker outside a house in Atherton, Wigan.

Residents today described the ‘scary’ moment police descended on their street near the town centre. Police were called to Bolton Old Road to reports of two people seriously injured at 9.15pm yesterday.

Speaking to the MEN, residents spoke of the large police presence that was seen at Bolton Old Road which was cordoned off for a short while with multiple police, ambulance and police helicopter spotted at the scene.

One resident said: “It was full of police vans and two ambulance. The police put tape on both sides of the road and there was a helicopter and everything, it was scary.”

This morning forensic teams were searching Bolton Old Road. Detectives were seen carrying door-to-door enquiries.

Another resident who wished to remain anonymous said: “It was awful, this used to be a quiet place until they put all the riff raff in the area.”

The man and woman were taken to hospital with their injuries not thought to be life threatening. No arrests have been made and investigations continue.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "At around 9.15pm last night police received a report of a seriously injured male and female on Bolton Old Road, Atherton.

"It is believed they were injured by an armed man. Both were taken to hospital for treatment where it is understood their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

"No arrests have been made at this moment in time but enquiries are ongoing.”
