Sarina Wiegman and Beth Mead make history as England reach Women’s Euros final

Manager Sarina Wiegman and forward Beth Mead both made history as England thrashed Sweden 4-0 on Tuesday night to reach the final of the 2022 Women’s European Championship.

It was a memorable night in Sheffield as Mead opened the scoring, with Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Fran Kirby completing the comfortable victory over a top side.

The victory sets up a blockbuster final on Sunday at Wembley against either Germany or France, with England returning to the showpiece of the tournament for the first time since 2009, when they were beaten by the Germans.

Wiegman has been to the final since 2009, leading her native Netherlands to glory at the 2017 Women’s European Championship.

Now she is back in the final, Wiegman is the first coach to lead two different countries to the final of the Women’s European Championship, proving herself to be one of the very best managers in the world.

Wiegman also extends her stunning unbeaten record with England, playing 19 games, winning 17 of them and drawing two.

Mead has also secured herself a bit of history, which could get even better for her in Sunday’s final if she can keep up her remarkable goal-scoring run.

The Arsenal striker scored her sixth goal of the tournament, which equals the record for most goals in an individual Women’s Euros, set by Germany’s Inka Grings in 2009.

Her sixth goal of this competition also meant she is England’s record goal-scorer in the Women’s Euros, edging ahead of Jodie Taylor who scored five in 2017.

Mead will be hoping to keep up her fine form on Sunday and get closer to Grings and fellow Germany legend Birgit Prinz, who share the all-time Women’s Euors record on 10 goals.
