Man taken to hospital with facial injuries after 'large fight' in street

A man was taken to hospital with facial injuries after a 'large fight' broke out in a street in Ashton-under-Lyne. The commotion erupted on Water Street at around 7pm on Tuesday evening (July 26).

Police have since confirmed they were called to reports of a fight, with a member of the public reporting 'a lot' of people as being involved in the incident, which left a man in hospital.

A cordon was erected on Welbeck Street North shortly afterwards, with a significant police presence remaining at the scene into the evening. Crime scene investigators were also present and carried out fingertip searches of the ground.

Photos show a large number of police officers at the scene, many of which were taking statements from onlookers. One man said he drove past to see a 'commotion' before seeing a male with his head 'covered in blood'.

He said: "I was just driving past and stopped when I saw loads of people stood around. There was loads of commotion.

"I got out and then I saw a man in the street with his hands to his head. He was covered in blood and taken away in an ambulance."

The cordon was extended on Welbeck Street North between Katherine Street and Burlington Street. Officers were also seen walking down the back alleys in their investigations.

The injuries sustained by the male are not thought to be life-threatening. Greater Manchester Police were unable to confirm if any arrests had been made in relation to the incident.
