Malik Tillman swerved Rangers permanent transfer but PSV move is negative and lacks ambition

Malik Tillman’s decision to tear up his Rangers deal and sign up to a similar agreement at PSV Eindhoven shows a lack of ambition.

Michael Beale and his Light Blues also have the chance to prove that over their next two Champions League qualifiers. The American international impressed at Ibrox last season and Rangers had the option to buy him. Bayern Munich, however, triggered their options to take him back and Rangers received a six figure payment in return.

It was clear that come the end of the season that Tillman didn’t see his future at Ibrox. That is fair enough. There was talk of English Premier League interest and that would have been perfectly understandable. To see Tillman step up to one of Europe’s top leagues would have seemed the most natural progression for the attacker. Even if he had gone back into the Bayern Munich squad that would have been seen as another step up, yet he turns up in the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven. They aren’t even the champions. It can hardly be classed as a step up from Rangers; they are playing catch-up to Feyenoord and like the Ibrox side are trying to get through qualifiers to get into the Champions League.

It could be argued as a negative move or at best, his switch to PSV is a sideways step. It is nothing better than that. After his move to Rangers he should have been looking to play regularly in a top, top league. Tillman will have his reasons and his camp will argue that moving to PSV is the right step at this time in his career. Rangers, however, have the chance to cast major doubts over his decision.

They dumped the Dutch side out of the Champions League last season and they are looking to do it again. PSV will be gunning for revenge and may even be stronger than last
