Maidstone United manager George Elokobi reflects on life at 40

Maidstone United manager George Elokobi is grateful for everything as he reflects on turning 40.

From humble beginnings in Cameroon to a Premier League footballer with Wolves, Elokobi is enjoying a remarkable life.

He savours every moment and continues to do so.

The former left-back celebrated his milestone birthday last Saturday as United drew 1-1 at Tonbridge.

“I’m just loving everything I’ve done thus far, for 40 years,” said Elokobi.

“It’s important for me to keep going, to be thankful.

“In this life, when you’ve got health, then anything is possible.

“For me, it’s the journey along the way where you’ve met so many people, you’ve made friends, you’ve been an integral part of so many different communities along the way, right from Cameroon all the way to the UK and around the UK.

“Now, as a manager, it’s being able to give people the chance to be a professional footballer and, with the help of my management team, ensure they are absolutely loving life.

“That’s the job in hand, and making the community happy.

“It’s not just playing football, it’s how do we act, how do we behave around the community?

“It’s a big part of it and when you look back and reflect, it’s important that you smile.

“Hopefully I’ve got another 30-40 years ahead of me and there will be plenty of smiles and laughter, love and peace.

“I look back and I smile all the time because there are so many people that want to have the sort of life I’ve got.

“I’m truly grateful for everything that comes my way and the people that come along to ensure I make their day a better day, but they make my day a better day as well.”
