Ebbsfleet United manager Josh Wright reacts to 4-1 National League South defeat at Chesham United
Ebbsfleet boss Josh Wright felt his side had only themselves to blame after conceding four second-half goals at Chesham on Saturday.
The Fleet suffered only their second defeat in 13 National League South games.
But it was the manner of the goals conceded that left Wright disappointed.
“I said to the players there that it wasn't a case of someone winning that, it was a team losing it, and I mean that literally in terms of throwing it away,” said the Fleet boss.
“An absolute moment of madness brings on the first goal, but a five to 10-minute spell of madness cost us the game, threw the game away. We gave that game away, we lost it ourselves because we actually started the second half really strong to go and get that second.”
Wright dissected the two goals conceded in the space of six minutes. The first saw Tom Dallison’s ill-advised backpass and a heavy touch from debutant keeper Ryan Sandford present Mitchell Weiss with a simple goal. The second goal came following a poor clearance from Mustapha Olagunju.
“We played naïve,” said Wright. “We made a stupid decision in the first place to go back with a throw-in when we were in the ascendancy.
“Then obviously the ball ends up at a goalkeeper's feet when it probably doesn't need to, a heavy touch and before we know it, it's 1-1. Crazy moment, the margins in games that cost you and we've thrown that away.
“The second one, lazy defending, we've got the ball up in the final third. We give it away, was there a foul? Maybe, maybe not. But then before we know it, 10 seconds later, a wide cross and someone takes a big swipe at it in the box, doesn't defend properly, which we don't get at the other end.
“It was a 10-minute spell of madness that has just thrown that game away.
