Maidstone United manager George Elokobi’s verdict after Ruben Carvalho’s injury-time equaliser at Chelmsford City ends three-match losing run in National League South

Manager George Elokobi saw the character he was looking for as Maidstone ended their losing run.

The Stones, trailing 1-0 to a Lyle Taylor goal, were seconds away from a fourth successive National League South defeat at Chelmsford on Monday night.

But they salvaged a draw in the fifth minute of added time thanks to substitute Ruben Carvalho’s first league goal since his summer move from Maidenhead.

Having conceded at the death in a 1-0 defeat at Chippenham two days earlier, it was a big moment for the Stones as they turned the tables with a late goal of their own.

There’s work to be done in the pursuit of a play-off spot - they’re seven points off the pace in 13th - but the draw at Melbourne Park is something to build on.

“Our dressing room hasn’t changed,” said Elokobi.

“Players get frustrated, but they’re honest, and I’ve said this from day one.

“They want to do well for themselves, for one another, for Maidstone United Football Club, and they certainly want to do well for me and Craig (Fagan, No.2) and the management team.

“They know how hard we work to try and send them out there to play with a freedom and confidence and belief that they’ve shown today, and they did that on Saturday, too.

“It was just one moment where we didn’t defend a restart but, today, we defended restarts excellently.

“Chelmsford scored a goal but our heads didn’t drop.

“In football, you’ve got to show character and the boys did exceptionally well in terms of how they went about the game in very difficult conditions.
