Maidstone United defender David Agbontohoma hasn’t had the minutes he was hoping for but his attitude remains first-class
David Agbontohoma says he will always be ready to do his bit for Maidstone United.
The centre-half has made just three National League South starts since signing last summer as a promotion-winner with Boreham Wood.
But his positive attitude makes him the definition of a team player and he’ll do whatever he can to help.
He impressed following his introduction as a second-half substitute at Chelmsford on Monday night as Maidstone ended their three-match losing run with a 1-1 draw.
His defensive work earned praise from manager George Elokobi, while his long throw provided a threat.
“The gaffer chooses the team, you’ve just got to stay ready and I feel like I have been,” said Agbontohoma.
“When I’ve been called upon, you’ve just got to do the job that I need to do.
“Everyone wants to be on the pitch but only 11 people can start.
“It’s just the mindset of being ready and when you’re called upon, you’ve got to do the job you’re asked to do.
“Everyone wants to achieve that one goal, which is to get promoted, so whatever your role is at that current moment in time, you’ve just got to do it to the best of your ability.”
There’s been stiff competition in central defence this season, with George Fowler, Taylor Foran and Lexus Beeden ahead of Agbontohoma in the pecking order.
But a knee injury to Beeden, who’d been in great form, opened the door for Agbontohoma to return to the matchday squad and pick up minutes, including a start against Slough.
He’s close to his fellow defenders and is pleased for whoever starts.
Maidstone host leaders Dorking on Saturday (3pm) and relegation-threatened Enfield on Tuesday (7.45pm).
