Maidstone United captain Sam Corne joins local rivals Tonbridge Angels after seven years at the Gallagher Stadium
Captain Sam Corne has ended his seven-year stay at Maidstone United - joining local rivals Tonbridge Angels.
Midfielder Corne played 236 games for the Stones after signing from Ashford in the summer of 2019, scoring 33 goals.
He was a key part of the side who won the National League South title in 2022 and cemented his name in the history books by scoring the winner at Portman Road as United stunned Championship high-fliers Ipswich in the FA Cup two years ago.
Corne, 29, was offered a new deal this summer, on improved terms, but has chosen to join Tonbridge.
“Sadly, my time at Maidstone United has come to an end,” said Corne in a leaving statement posted on social media.
“It's been an emotional and unforgettable seven years of my life, and I'm incredibly grateful for every moment.
“To have played over 200 games for this club and had the honour of captaining it is something I will always be proud of.
“From promotion to relegation, FA Cup success, and so many memories along the way, l've experienced things I could only have dreamed of when I first arrived.
“However, the time has come for a new chapter in my career and an opportunity that I simply couldn't turn down.
“I would like to thank everyone connected with the club from top to bottom - the owners, chief executive, managers, staff, players, and most importantly, the fans.
“You have made both me and my family feel at home from day one, and for that we will always be thankful.
“While my journey as a player at Maidstone United may be ending, this club will always hold a special place in my heart. This may be the end of a chapter, but it will never truly be goodbye. I wish everyone at Maidstone United every success in the future.
“Thank you for everything.”
