M62 traffic LIVE updates as lanes closed after 'multi-vehicle' crash

There are huge delays on motorways around Greater Manchester following a crash on the M62.

Queues are building in both directions between junctions 11 at Birchwood and 12 for the M60 Eccles Interchange this morning (October 23).

It follows a 'multi-vehicle' collision, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring service.

The incident took place on the westbound carriageway, where three lanes were initially closed, before one reopened

But rush hour drivers heading towards Manchester from the M6, Warrington and Merseyside are also affected on the eastbound side.

Queues are stretching beyond the M6, towards junction eight of the M62 at Burtonwood.

There are also delays on the M6 southbound between junctions 23 at St Helens and 21A for the M62 Croft Interchange.

Traffic is also slow on the M60 anticlockwise from Simister Island to the Eccles Interchange at junction 12, plus the M62 westbound from Heywood at junction 19.

A post on the Inrix traffic monitoring service said: "Severe delays and three lanes closed due to multi-vehicle accident on M62 Westbound from J12 M60 J12 (Eccles Interchange) to J11 A574 Birchwood Way (Birchwood).

"Lanes two three and four (of four). Traffic also queues eastbound due to on-lookers."

Long queues remain, with two lanes still shut as emergency repairs take place.

An update from Inrix said:

"Severe delays and two lanes closed due to recovery work and earlier accident on M62 Westbound from J12 M60 J12 (Eccles Interchange) to J11 A574 Birchwood Way (Birchwood).

"Lanes three and four (of four).

"Traffic also queues eastbound due to on-lookers."

There are queues on the A57 in both directions
