LIVE updates as John Belfield found guilty of murder of Thomas Campbell

Jurors in the Thomas Campbell murder are set to deliver their verdicts on the charges faced by accused John Belfield.

Mr Belfield, 31, is alleged to have been the 'mastermind' behind the fatal attack on Mr Campbell. He denies murdering the 38-year-old and conspiring to rob him. An alternative count of manslaughter is on the indictment.

Mr Campbell's body was discovered by neighbours at his home in Mossley, Tameside, in July 2022, jurors have been told. He was 'tortured to death', the jury previously heard.

Three men 'pounced' on him as he arrived home late on a Saturday night, Manchester Crown Court has been told. Prosecutors allege Mr Belfield had 'motivation' for planning to rob him. Jurors were told Mr Belfield was allegedly seeking 'items of value' from Mr Campbell's home.

They have also heard Mr Campbell was in a relationship with Mr Belfield's ex-girlfriend Demi-Lee Driver and that Mr Belfield had displayed 'hostility' towards the pair.

He has denied those allegations. Mr Belfield's is barrister told jurors there is 'no direct evidence' he was at Mr Campbell's house at the time of the attack.

Earlier in the trial, Mr Belfield denied he was jealous of Mr Campbell's relationship with his ex-partner. Giving evidence, he said he had planned to steal drugs belonging to Mr Campbell, but denied wanting to rob him or use violence.

Mr Campbell's ex-wife, Coleen Campbell, Reece Steven and Stephen Cleworth were previously convicted in connection with his death. Coleen Campbell and Cleworth were convicted of manslaughter, while Steven was found guilty of murder. The trio were also found guilty of conspiracy to rob.
