Train cancellations LIVE updates as services 'severely' disrupted across Greater Manchester

Rail passengers are facing 'severe disruption' this morning (July 21) as services running into Manchester's Oxford Road and Piccadilly stations are cancelled and delayed.

The disruption is affecting Northern services.

Six trains running between Piccadilly, Rose Hill Marple, and New Mills Central, have been cancelled due to a fault with the signalling system.

There are also expected to be a slew of cancellations due to a broken down train blocking the lines between Southport and Wigan Wallgate.

The breakdown has seen a train running between Southport and Oxford Road cancelled.

Northern says: "Our maintenance teams have been unable to resolve the issues and the train will require the assistance of another train to clear the line."

Train services running to and from Southport and Wigan Wallgate stations will be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes. Disruption is expected until 9.30am, says Northern.

Northern has said: "Train services are unable to run between Southport and Wigan Wallgate (in this direction only).

"Services that run from Wigan Wallgate to Southport are NOT affected.

"First services affected: 07:03 Southport to Manchester Oxford Road is delayed at Burscough Bridge."

The 08:03 Southport to Manchester Oxford Road due 09:18 has been cancelled.

So far, due to a signalling fault, the following Northern train services have been cancelled:

09:19 Manchester Piccadilly to New Mills Central due 09:51

07:50 Manchester Piccadilly to Rose Hill Marple due 08:22
