LIVE updates: All traffic stopped on M60 due to ongoing police incident

All traffic has been stopped on the M60 this evening due to an ongoing police incident. Traffic is currently being held at junction 23 for Ashton-under-Lyne in both directions.

Emergency services, including North West Motorway Police are at the scene currently. Paramedics are also at the scene according to National Highways.

Pictures from the scene show huge queues building due to the ongoing closure. The nature of the police incident has not yet been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service have been approached for further details.

This is a live incident. Updates to follow below.

The latest update from traffic service Inrix says: "M60 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to police incident at J23 A635 Manchester Road (Ashton Under Lyne). Congestion to clockwise back to the M60 J22(Failsworth) and anticlockwise back to M60 J25 (Brinnington)."

The Manchester Evening News understands the emergency services presence is in response to a person falling from a bridge earlier this evening. Their condition is not known.

We are still awaiting full details from Greater Manchester Police.

A statement from GMP, shared on social media reads: "TRAFFIC CONJESTION & CLOSURES M60 Junction 23

"Please be aware of road closures & delays within the area of Manchester Road, AUL & M60 Motorway (junc 23), whilst emergency services deal with an incident.

"Avoid the area if possible and consider other routes."
