LIVE: M61 closed in both directions due to 'police incident' - latest updates

The M61 is closed in both directions due to a 'police-led incident'. Emeregency services are at the scene between junctions six for Bolton and eight for Chorley.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area if possible. Lancs Police posted on X: "We're currently dealing with an incident on the M61 motorway, and as a result is currently closed between junctions 6 to 8 in both directions (North and Southbound).

"Please avoid the area where possible."

Traffic cameras show queues backing up to junction five.

National Higways North West posted: "The M61 between J6 (Bolton) and J8 (Chorley is closed in both directions due to a police-led incident. @LancsPolice remains on scene.

"Information for diversions will follow."

Drivers travelling north are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on local road signs.

Those travelling south should follow the hollow square diversion symbol on local road signs.

Traffis is building up following the closure. National Highways say there are currently delays of at least 30 minutes and 'due to the nature of the incident' are unable to say when the motorway will reopen.

A statement on the National Highways website says:

Lancashire Police currently lead the response to an incident which was first reported to National Highways at 11.40am.

National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management.
