LIVE: Road CLOSED after van hits railway bridge - latest updates

A road has been closed in Stockport after a van struck a bridge.

Claremont Road is closed at the junction of Heathbank Road, in Cheadle Hulme, this morning (February 17). It comes after a vehicle struck a railway bridge.

An image from the scene, seen by the Manchester Evening News, shows a white van wedged underneath the structure. Safety inspections are ongoing.

In a series of posts on X, a Stockport council spokesperson said: "Road closure at the junction of Heathbank Road and Claremont Road in Cheadle Hulme due to an incident where a vehicle has struck the bridge.

"This section of the road will remain closed until Network Rail have completed their assessment and confirmed it is safe.

"Diversions from Heathbank Road are already in place supporting the planned resurfacing work that started this morning, so no access from Hulme Hall Road to Heathbank Road will be possible except for residents.

"Highfield Road is still accessible to residents for Highfield Road and Heathbank Road, but there is no through-road access under the low bridge from Highfield Road to Claremont Road."
