LIVE: Metrolink trams STOPPED following fault affecting major route - latest updates

Trams have been suspended on part of a busy Metrolink line.

Transport bosses says services have been stopped on the Ashton line, in Tameside and east Manchester, this afternoon (March 12).

It comes after a tram on the line was affected by a fault.

Passengers are facing disruption this afternoon, with Bee Network buses accepting Metrolink tickets while the issue is ongoing.

A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said: "Due to a tram fault, there are no tram services operating between Velopark and Ashton-under-Lyne. Services are operating between Velopark and Crumpsall.

"There is ticket acceptance in place on the 7, 53, 76, 171, 172, 216, 219, 230 and 231 bus services. Simply show the driver your Metrolink ticket or pass when boarding.

"To continue your journey by bus, please visit our journey planner. Please select ‘options’ and check only the bus icon is highlighted.

"This feature is also available on the Bee Network app where you can also find bus tracking information. In addition to public transport, there are several destinations on this line that can be easily reached by walking."

There is no estimated time given for services to be resumed.

TfGM says tram tickets will be accepted 'until further notice' as severe delays continue on the Ashton line.

TfGM says trams are now running again on the Ashton line.

A spokesperson said:

"Tram services have resumed between Velopark and Ashton-under-Lyne, with severe delays.

"Ticket acceptance will remain in place on selected local buses.

"Sorry for any inconvenience caused to your journey."

Passengers are being urged to find alternative methods to get around this afternoon.
