LIVE: M6 closed with major delays amid police pursuit of black BMW - latest updates

Lanes are closed on the M6 this afternoon due to an ongoing 'police incident' with emergency services at the scene.

Three lanes are blocked off causing delays and slow traffic on the M6 Thelwall Viaduct northbound from J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) to J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston).

It has now been confirmed that this followed a police pursuit of a BMW that was followed from Warrington, onto the M56 and then the M6 where it was eventually stopped by officers. A man from Manchester has been arrested.

Motorway cameras show miles of congestion building ahead of rush hour due to the ongoing incident. Cheshire Constabulary have advised drivers to avoid the area.

An update on Inrix said: "Severe delays due to earlier incident on M6 Thelwall Viaduct Northbound from J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) to J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston).

"Congestion to J19 (Knutsford) and roads around Warrington are congested as traffic seeks an alternative route."

Three lanes are currently closed between junction 20 and 21. Cheshire police said officers are still dealing with the incident and have advised drivers to 'avoid the area'.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At around 3.30pm on Wednesday 8 November, officers attempted to stop a vehicle on the A49 near Stretton, Warrington.

"The vehicle, a black BMW convertible, failed to stop and made off onto the M56 and then onto the M6.

"Police subsequently stopped the vehicle near to junction 20 of the M6 northbound and the driver, a 33-year-old man from Manchester, has been arrested
