LIVE: Long delays on M60 as three lanes are shut amid lorry fire - latest updates

Long delays are expected through rush-hour this morning after a lorry burst into flames on the M60.

The clockwise carriageway of the motorway between junction 23 for Ashton-under-Lyne and junction 24 for Denton was fully shut off at around 11pm last night (Wednesday). It was fully closed for around two hours as emergency services responded.

The lorry has now been fully extinguished, according to traffic alert service Inrix. Three lanes are now shut off.

Highways England said 'complex recovery' is taking place. The closures are expected to remain in place through the rush-hour this morning.

The latest tweet posted by Highways North West said: "REMINDER: 3 lanes (of 4) remain closed on the #M60 clockwise between J23 (#AshtonUnderLyne) and J24 (#Denton) for ongoing complex recovery. The lane closures are expected to remain in place throughout the morning, please plan ahead of your journey if travelling in the area."

Last night, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At 10:25pm this evening (Wednesday 20 July) we were called to reports of a vehicle fire on the M60 clockwise between junctions 23 and 24, involving an HGV on the hard shoulder generating a large plume of smoke. Four fire engines from Ashton, Stalybridge and Hyde fire stations were quickly mobilised to the scene, together with support appliances, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are currently tackling the fire using three hose reels and fire beaters.

"Crews are being supported by colleagues from Greater Manchester Police, who will managing traffic around the incident area until firefighters have concluded their operations."
