Kasper Schmeichel drops hint over his Leicester City future amid transfer talk

Kasper Schmeichel has suggested he will still be a Leicester City player come the start of next season amid talk over his future.

The City captain has been the subject of transfer chatter over recent weeks, and it is understood the club have been scouring the market for new goalkeepers. Brighton’s Robert Sanchez is one of those who has been linked.

Schmeichel has one year remaining on his deal at the King Power Stadium and prompted talk over his immediate future when he said earlier this year he may “try somewhere else”, having previously spoken of his desire to play in the Champions League again before he retires. But his end-of-season message suggests he intends to be at City next term as he looked ahead to the new campaign.

He wrote on social media after the 4-1 victory over Southampton: “Great to end the season on a high. Thanks for your support in a tough campaign. Better things to come next season for us.”

Manager Brendan Rodgers’ decision to give back-up goalkeeper Danny Ward a run-out in the win over Watford also prompted talk over Schmeichel’s future. But the manager said ahead of the Southampton game that he did not feel it would be the 35-year-old’s final outing for the club.

“I don’t think so,” Rodgers replied when asked last week if the fixture could be Schmeichel’s farewell. “I think he’s very happy here.

“Naturally he’s getting to the age where he can see the finishing line a little bit. In my conversations with him, he’s very happy. He’s got a year to go.

“It’s important for him and for us he’s in the best condition he can possibly be in. You’ve seen with Wardy that there’s a challenge there.
