Welling United manager Ryan Maxwell discusses the Wings’ formidable home form after nine wins and a draw in their previous 10 matches at Park View Road

Ryan Maxwell believes Welling United’s home form gives them a psychological edge over visiting sides.

The Wings bid to maintain their 100 per cent record at Park View Road this season when they host Cheshunt in the Isthmian Premier tonight.

They made it four wins from four in the league at the weekend after beating Wingate & Finchley 4-1 courtesy of Zak O’Keefe, Jamie Reynolds, Ryan Kingsford and Kaan Bennett.

Maxwell’s side also beat Faversham 2-1 in an FA Cup first qualifying replay last week in front of their home fans.

“The home form is impeccable this season and that’s 10 consecutive unbeaten performances going back to last season with nine wins and one draw, which is quite formidable,” said Wings boss Maxwell.

“My previous club (Sittingbourne) managed to do a whole season in the league unbeaten at home and I’m sure teams were turning up trying to contain us rather than coming to win the game, so I know it has an effect.

“A lot of sport is psychological and, ultimately, if you can get a psychological advantage, you take it, and I know for a fact that people do not look forward to coming to Welling.

“That’s exactly what I set out to achieve and at the minute it’s coming together nicely.”

Cheshunt are yet to win this season but five of their seven league games have ended in draws.

That suggests they will be tricky opponents.

“They’re in every game,” said Maxwell. “It only takes one goal in all those games and they could be sitting in a very different position, so it can change very quickly.

“We’ve got full respect for them. Due diligence is being done to ensure we leave no stone unturned.

“We know it will be a tough match and we have to make sure our mentality is spot on and we have to play to our best.”
