Kasper Schmeichel questioned on Leicester City future after momentous Denmark win

Leicester City captain Kasper Schmeichel shrugged off questions over his future after helping Denmark to one of their best-ever results.

What happens next for the City number one has been a hot topic over recent weeks after it emerged the club had been keeping an eye on the market for potential new goalkeepers. He is also entering the final 12 months of his contract, and said earlier this year that he may want to try somewhere else before hanging up his gloves.

On Friday night, Schmeichel played his first game since the end of the Premier League season, helping Denmark win 2-1 away at World Cup holders France in their Nations League opener. Karim Benzema put the hosts in front, but former Cardiff striker Andreas Cornelius came off the bench to fire in a brace and clinch victory for the Danes.

But asked about his City situation after the match, Schmeichel brushed off the questions, insisting his focus was on Denmark duty. Asked what thoughts he has on his future with only one year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium, he replied: “None at all right now. I'm with the national team right now, and then I'm going on vacation.”

Then asked if he would be weighing up his future after his vacation, he said: “Right now I have been involved in over 60 matches. Now I'm looking forward to the last three games, and then I'm going on holiday.”

He did add on City’s campaign: “Our form has been up and down, so it was important that we had a good end to the season. Finishing eighth in the Premier League is the fourth-best result for the club (in the Premier League era) and we also reached a semi-final in one of the European tournaments for the first time.”

Schmeichel has been with City for 11 seasons and his 479 appearances
