Kanayo Megwa recalled from Airdrie loan as Hibs land major blow

Airdrie have been dealt a major blow with news that Hibs have recalled defender Kanayo Megwa from his loan spell.

Megwa, 19, was taken to Dubai by the Easter Road club for their winter training camp, and the Edinburgh giants have ended his spell at New Broomfield, after he impressed boss Nick Montgomery.

The defender had impressed in 14 games for the Diamonds in the Scottish Championship.

Hibs boss Nick Montgomery told the club’s website: “I have been really impressed with Kanayo from watching him at Airdrieonians and when he was with us in Dubai.

“He has a great attitude, has trained well, and has a lot of quality attributes as a player.

“Kanayo has had a great spell away on loan. He has made good progress, and has come back an improved player with a lot more confidence too. This is the perfect example of how loan spells can benefit some of our young players.

“With Lewis Miller away with the Australian National Team and Chris Cadden returning from injury, this gives us another option at right-back and I am confident we can give him opportunities in the second half of the season.”

Airdrieonians said they’re sure Megwa has a bright future and will be watching his career with interest.

Boss Rhys McCabe told their website: “Kanayo’s spell here was enjoyable and rewarding for both sides.

“We’ve given him the platform to show what he can do, and you could see him growing into the position and getting stronger and more confident week by week.

“We’ve played a small part in what will be a very good career, and we wish him nothing but the best.”
