Jonny Evans gets new Manchester United squad number

Jonny Evans has been handed the No.27 shirt at Manchester United.

While it looked as though Andre Onana would become United's second signing of the transfer window after the arrival of Mason Mount, Evans beat the new goalkeeper to the punch by signing a unique short-term deal.

The veteran centre-back has been training at Carrington over the summer to keep fit as he looks for a new club following his release from Leicester City and has impressed Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff.

With defensive duo Tyrell Malacia and Rhys Bennett picking up injuries that have ruled them out of pre-season, Evans has been signed on a short-term contract so he can take part in the Edinburgh and San Diego legs of the tour.

Evans has been named on the bench for Wednesday's friendly with Lyon in the Scottish capital but could still see 45 minutes of action in the second half. Ten Hag is expected to change the entire starting XI at half-time, as he did in the opening friendly win over Leeds United, so he will likely come on for his second debut alongside Will Fish in place of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Given he's in action, Evans has been handed his new squad number and will wear No.27 during his stay. The number was occupied by left-back Alex Telles which confirms the Brazilian is closing in on a departure after being marked as a must-sell by the club. Wout Weghorst wore the shirt during his loan spell last season with Telles spending the year at Sevilla.

Evans wore No.23 for his first four seasons in the United first team before swapping for No.6 for the second four before departing for West Brom in 2015. Both numbers are currently occupied by Luke Shaw and Martinez, respectively.
