'Disappointed with ourselves' - Erik ten Hag sends message after Manchester United loss to Wrexham

Erik ten Hag thought Manchester United's youngsters were 'a little erratic' in the first half of their pre-season friendly against Wrexham, although he admitted the experience would serve the players well going forward.

Wrexham secured promotion to League Two for the first time in 15 years last season and to make their game against United in San Diego competitive, it was agreed they would play against a youthful academy team.

Alvaro Fernandez, Dan Gore and Hannibal were the only players who are part of United's first-team tour group to make the trip for the clash and they played in a starting side supplemented by several Reds academy prospects.

Jonny Evans was the only senior player in the line-up and despite some bright early work from United, Wrexham took the lead just before the 30th-minute mark before increasing their advantage moments later from a long throw-in.

Although United's youngsters struggled with the physicality of Wrexham, the deficit was halved on the stroke of half-time when right-back Marc Jurado found the back of the net, with Fernandez providing the assist.

That gave Travis Binnion's side hope for the second half, but Dan Gore was shown a dubious red card after the interval and Wrexham gained control again, ultimately leading to them to score another for a 3-1 victory.

Ten Hag spoke to MUTV after the defeat and he said the defeat would serve as a learning experience for the players.

"It's always disappointing, we're disappointed with ourselves," Ten Hag said. "The way we played in the first half was a little bit erratic. We lacked structure, we had some other objectives [that we didn't reach].

"But they are young players, we have to learn
