Jamie McGrath reveals Aberdeen transfer clinchers that sealed the deal at THIRD time of asking

Jamie McGrath admits the lure of playing in Europe was a major factor in getting him to Aberdeen at the THIRD time of asking.

The Republic of Ireland cap made his debut in last week’s 2-2 Europa League play-off first leg with Hacken and is looking to help the Dons finish the job at Pittodrie tomorrow night. Former gaffers Stephen Glass and Jim Goodwin tried to bring McGrath to the club but it was Barry Robson who sealed the deal at the end of the midfielder’s Wigan contract.

McGrath said: “I know I’ve had interest from Aberdeen in the past and for whatever reasons it didn’t happen. But at times it wasn’t always in my control. I don’t look into what has happened in the past but I’m an Aberdeen player now and want to do the best I can for this club. I know the magnitude of this club and it has a brilliant fan base. Look at the turnout in Gothenburg and it was nice to reward them with that comeback last week.

“I hope it’s the start of a successful period. European nights are a big draw and the fans will be out in force to Pittodrie on Thursday. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The 26-year-old had big-money offers overseas but knows the potential of the Pittodrie club. In fact, he reckons playing in Scotland gets the best out of him – as has been shown in successful spells at St Mirren and Dundee United. He added: “I spent a couple of weeks weighing up my options. I had a few abroad.

“It was a big decision for me and my family. There was interest in India and the US but the draw of such a big club like Aberdeen was massive. I’m also used to Scotland and settled here. I already feel settled in the dressing room.

“I feel we have a really good group who will do well and I’m convinced I’ve made the right decision.”
