James Trafford's frank admission on Man City exit and reveals defender career advice in Burnley move

James Trafford admits it was not a tough decision to end his time at Manchester City having not spent much time with Pep Guardiola's time in the past few years after sealing a switch to Burnley.

City agreed an initial fee of £15m with add-ons of up to £4m for Trafford's services in an overall £19m deal with the Clarets earlier this month with City having a 20 per cent sell-on fee and a buy-back clause in the deal. Trafford had signed a new contract at City last summer until 2027.

But he has now had his move to Turf Moor confirmed and he has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Clarets. The 20-year-old could face his old team very soon when Burnley host City at Turf Moor for the Premier League curtain raiser on Friday, August 11.

Trafford had been at City since he was aged 12 and had on previous occasions spoken of the desire to be number one at the Etihad Stadium one day. However, with Ederson and Stefan Ortega the current first and second choice, Trafford looked unlikely to be playing regularly for City in the near future.

Trafford has spent the past two seasons away from City out on loan getting minutes under his belt in League One. After an unsuccessful spell at Accrington Stanley, Trafford has had a standout 18 months at Bolton Wanderers.

Trafford became Ian Evatt's number one in that time, making a total of 74 apperances for the club. He helped the Whites to ninth and fifth-placed finishes in the third tier over the past two campaigns, as well as winning the Papa John's Trophy with Bolton at Wembley as the Whites thrashed Plymouth Argyle 4-0 to claim silverware.
