Manchester City consider the imminent signing of Josko Gvardiol as a player who can improve their defence for the present and the future.

Gvardiol, 21, was one of the most-wanted centre-backs in Europe before City made their move, agreeing a £77.5m fee on Wednesday for the Croatian. He will travel to Manchester for a medical this week, before completing the move and joining his new teammates for their treble defence.

His first task will be to compete with City's world-class centre-backs and adapt to Pep Guardiola's system that relies heavily on their defenders to start the possession-based attacks.

Looking further ahead, it's encouraging for City fans to hear Gvardiol being thought of as a defender who can be a mainstay in defence for the next decade, continuing their recent trend of young, promising signings who have long-term potential in the squad.
