Day two of the 2023 Women’s World Cup continued to bring plenty of thrilling action, as Spain and Switzerland both opened their campaigns with straightforward victories.
Elsewhere, Canada and Nigeria brought no goals but no shortage of drama in their 0-0 draw, including the tournament’s first red card and history denied from the penalty spot.

Spain stroll to victory
Spain cruising past Costa Rica 3-0 might be the most predictable result so far from a World Cup that has already thrown up some surprises, but it was nevertheless an impressive showing from La Roja.
Jorge Vilda’s side mustered a huge 46 shots and completed 596 passes as they utterly dominated with 80% possession.
A Valeria Del Campo own goal opened the scoring after 21 minutes following superb play by Esther Gonzalez, before Aitana Bonmati doubled the lead soon after thanks to some delightful footwork in the box.
Gonzalez then scored herself to make it three before the half-hour mark, and Spain could even afford Jennifer Hermoso to miss a penalty as they eased to three points.
The action in Wellington will make frightening viewing for other sides in the tournament, with Spain able to introduce Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas and Liga F top scorer Alba Redondo from the bench.
For Costa Rica, the performance of goalkeeper Daniela Solera will be the main focus of celebrations with Las Ticas knowing results against Japan and Zambia will be more decisive in whether they progress from Group C.
