James McGarry to finalise Aberdeen FC transfer as final hurdle for defender is cleared

New dad James McGarry will finalise his move to Aberdeen over the coming days.

The Dons have had a deal in place with A-League champions Central Coast Mariners for more than a week. The move was held up because the New Zealand International’s wife was due to give birth. McGarry has since become a father to a baby boy and he is expected to travel to Scotland within the coming days to complete his Pittodrie switch.

The 25-year-old has already agreed a three year contract and done his medical. McGarry also has Irish citizenship and so that means Aberdeen won’t have the same issues trying to get a work permit. The Pittodrie side will hope McGarry will be available to get some minutes in for their Viaplay Cup clash with Stirling Albion next week. They are due to play their Europa League playoff against the winners of the BK Hacken and Zalgiris Vilnius tie the following week.

Barry Robson is bringing McGarry in to provide competition for Jonny Hayes and Jack MacKenzie in the left-back slot. The Aberdeen boss is also working on a number of different transfer targets ahead of the first European tie, including trying to get Liam Scales back from Celtic.
