Steve Clarke says he was virtually speechless in the dressing room as he refused to get caught up in a whirlwind of Scotland emotions.

But that didn't stop the boss making it clear exactly where things went wrong in their drubbing against the Netherlands. It was a bizarre night of international football in Amsterdam as Scotland gave the Dutch a run for their money but came out short-changed with a 4-0 thumping. Lawrence Shankland missed the best of a host of gilt-edged chances as the Scots failed to finish - and the clinical hosts, ranked No.6 in the world for a reason heading into Euro 2024, made us pay.

Speaking after the game, Clarke said: "I didn’t say a lot after it (in the dressing room). When emotions are as high as they are after a sore defeat it is better to go back to the hotel." But he wasn't holding back in his post-match debrief to the press as he laid out where things went wrong - and how he plans to bounce back.

“It’s a lot of goals and if you concede that many you are not going to win games. We know we have to tighten up. For 70 minutes it was 1-0. The reaction to the second goal was something we need to think about. How we dig in, how we make sure we are really hard to beat in the last 20 minutes. Even if it finishes 2-0 it finishes 2-0."

“It wasn’t a lack of resilience. There was a little frustration on the pitch at being 2-0 down when it should be at least 1-1, and they should be in the game and looking towards winning the game in the end."
