Scotland send the Netherlands for 'homework' as Dutch media forget drubbing to name Jeremie Frimpong the sinner

It may have been a heavy defeat for Scotland in the end - but Steve Clarke and his side left the Dutch media reaching for the panic button.

With Euro 2024 just around the corner the Tartan Army watched on as the Netherlands racked up the goals to make it six games without a win for Scotland. The hosts took the lead in Amsterdam against the run of play just before the break as a stunning Tijjani Reijnders strike beat Angus Gunn. Scotland passed up a host of chances in the second half with Lawrence Shankland cracking one off the bar before Ronald Koeman's men moved up a gear. Georginio Wijnaldum headed into the net before Wout Weghorst and Donyell Malen came off the bench to get in on the action at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

It was a bizarre evening in which the scoreline was embarrassing but the performance was, mostly, creditable from Scotland. And that's been reflected in some of the Dutch media assessments in the aftermath.

The crowd in the Johan Cruijff, singing happily, left the stands on Friday evening, after an apparently resounding victory over Scotland: 4-0. However, that reality was grossly distorted: for a long time the Dutch team played a downright weak international match.

The Scots were at least as dangerous. Mark Flekken made a spectacular save on a Ryan Christie header in the first half, and Scotland also had the best game of the game in the first part after the break. A blunder by the disappointing Mats Wieffer led to a huge chance for Lawrence Shankland, but the striker shot onto the crossbar.
