'I was begging' - Charlie Savage opens up on Manchester United departure after signing for Reading

Charlie Savage has admitted he was 'begging' Manchester United to let him leave the club once he knew Reading were interested in signing him.

The United academy graduate joined the League One side last week on a four-year deal. As revealed by the Manchester Evening News, the move includes a significant sell-on fee for the Reds, who will also retain the right to match any bid for the youngster in the future.

Savage, who made his first-team debut in December 2021 spent last season on loan at Forest Green Rovers, making 15 appearances as they were relegated from League One. He has now decided to test himself by leaving United permanently - admitting he had become 'too comfortable' at Old Trafford.

Savage hopes the move can kickstart the next phase of his development and has now explained how the move came about.

Speaking to Reading's in-house media team, he said: "It's amazing. As soon as I found out about it I just couldn't wait to get down and see the training ground and I look at it and it's amazing so it's great to be here.

"I think there's always been talk in the background, especially over the past season. I have a close relationship with Mark Bowen [Reading's Head of Football Operations] and he was a big part as to why I joined.

"I think it all came around sometime last week and as soon as it came around I was begging United to let me speak to Reading and I'm thankful to them to get it done."

Savage captained United for the second half of their opening pre-season friendly win against Leeds
