I scored an own goal on my Man United debut and never played again - but will forever be grateful

Di'Shon Bernard, for a moment, looks down at the keyboard of the laptop he is speaking via in Sheffield Wednesday's media suite at their Middlewood Road training ground and starts reminiscing.

He has been asked what it was like, at the age of 19, to make his Manchester United debut in a European fixture more than 3,500 miles away from Old Trafford. United were facing FC Astana in their penultimate Europa League group game in November 2019 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was the manager at the time, decided to ring the changes and name a youthful-looking side.

Alongside Bernard, who had joined United just over two years earlier from Chelsea, were the likes of Axel Tuanzebe, James Garner, Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes. In total, six debuts were handed out that evening.

Unfortunately for Bernard, his debut will be remembered by most for scoring an own-goal that led to Astana clinching all three points. Nevertheless, it did not take the shine off an evening he is unlikely to ever forget.

"It was a very special moment for me," Bernard told the Manchester Evening News. "I think it made it easier for me because I made my debut with a lot of the youth team boys that came up with me, mixed in with a few first-team players, like Luke Shaw and Lingard.

"Axel was next to me. But loads of the youth team boys were on the bench and obviously some played.

"It was in Kazakhstan, it was a far trip, very cold, but it was a moment that will live with me forever. It also made it easier because I think Kieran (McKenna) was the coach at the time as well and he was my youth team coach, so it was
