There's been a rush to judge the nine Rangers new boys over the first fortnight of the season and I’m well aware some of the early verdicts have been quite damning.

I’m not surprised by it either, even though I’ve made my own opinion clear that the time to make assessments won’t come until the start of next month, when the new arrivals will have eight or nine games under their belts. Of course, it’s ridiculous to start writing anyone off before they even know their way around the training ground at Auchenhowie but then again, that’s the thing that makes my old club such a special place.

They might think they’ve seen it all in their careers but they’re now discovering for themselves there is no other place on the planet where the expectations are sky high. That’s the price that comes with wearing the shirt. The fans are simply desperate for Beale’s side to start clicking and worried that, if not, they might be staring at another long, painful season.

I fully understand that passions are running high. And that’s exactly the way it should be - if they didn’t care so much then being a Rangers player wouldn’t be such a privilege. But, for what it’s worth, just four games into the new campaign, let me give my own progress report as an honest appraisal of the nine players who are discovering for themselves what it means to carry that honour.

He has got off to a great start. When he made that save after just six minutes against Servette on Tuesday night I got flashbacks to Allan McGregor. Yes, Butland has had a stop start career over the last couple of years so there were some obvious question marks when he was brought in to fill Greegy’s gloves. But I’ve seen enough already to suggest he’s more than up to the job.
