'I carry the piano for artists to play' - Fred knew exactly what he was for Manchester United

Fred has been pictured with his agent on a private jet flying to Turkey to complete his move to Fenerbahce this weekend and unsurprisingly, he was smiling with the endearing grin that is rarely absent from his face.

The midfielder, who was universally popular in the dressing room, always seemed to be laughing during his time at Manchester United and his infectious laugh was often heard by journalists when they attended open training.

He was equally popular with club staff as he was players. Fred was always polite and courteous around Carrington and he was recently described as 'one of the most friendly people I've ever interviewed' by an in-house journalist.

His personality shone through in an era in which blandness is encouraged, but it's fair to say his popularity fluctuated among the fanbase during his five-year stint because he was capable of being sublime and erratic.

Fred could have an excellent game against elite opposition before having a nightmare afternoon against relegation fodder. That inconsistency was jokingly embraced by some while antagonising and frustrating others.
