Huddersfield Town transfer needs come into focus after nine departures announced

Huddersfield Town have announced that six first-team players will depart the club at the end of their current contracts while their three loanees will all return to their parent clubs.

Jamal Blackman, Reece Brown, Fraizer Campbell, Carel Eiting, Naby Sarr and Alex Vallejo will all become free agents, while Tino Anjorin and Levi Colwill head back to Chelsea and Danel Sinani returns to Norwich City. Josh Koroma and Harry Toffolo have both had one-year extensions triggered on their existing contracts.

That brings extra clarity to where we might expect to see Leigh Bromby and their recruitment team focus their efforts throughout the transfer window, with the head of football operations telling us that attacking players will be the priority. Here’s what we think Town need as it stands.

Eiting and Vallejo both found it difficult to get in ahead of the emerging Jon Russell, but their exits still opens up at least one squad place for a ball-playing central midfielder. We’re not sure whether Corberan sees Russell’s future more in a defensive midfield role or as a number 8; whichever it is, a signing is required in the other role.

If Lewis O’Brien gets the Premier League move we expect he will, signing his replacement will also need to be a top priority. Duane Holmes and Scott High are both capable of playing those more box-to-box roles but Corberan tends to prefer Holmes in more attacking roles and High is still developing.

There has also been a notable vacancy for a ball-playing attacking midfielder that Sinani only partly covered last season. A player who is equally comfortable playing as an 8 or a 10 is therefore perhaps the top priority for Town over the summer.
