Philippe Clement offers Rangers stars 'white page' to write new stories as golden memory comes flooding back in Prague

Philippe Clement admits he has no other choice but to slot a square peg into a round hole in Prague.

But the Rangers boss insists he’s confident the club’s crisis at left-back won’t see their Europa League prospects turn pear-shaped. The Belgian has flown out for his first European clash in charge without a natural pick to slot in on the left-hand side of his defence after Borna Barisic picked up a thigh issue during the gaffer’s debut win over Hibs.

That would not have been too much of a problem had Clement’s predecessor Michael Beale not chosen to leave regular back-up Ridvan Yilmaz out of his UEFA squad. But with Dujon Sterling also crocked, the Ibrox boss now faces having to throw one of his players into the deep end against the Czechs out of position. He does have candidates for the job. Centre-back Ben Davies and midfielder John Lundstram seem the leading contenders but 20-year-old right-back Adam Devine has also filled in on his weaker foot previously.

It’ll be a tall order for whoever gets the nod but Clement isn’t crossing out his team’s chances just yet. The former Genk, Club Brugge and Monaco manager said: “There is no left-back in the squad, not a natural one. I’m not a coach who goes round in circles when there’s a problem. I like to find solutions, so it will be another player who does not play in his normal position. He will have to fill that position and do a job for the team.

“You can keep on talking and being negative but someone else needs to come in and do a job for the team. I expect everyone to attack together and to defend together.
