Hibs are RIGHT to cut Rangers and Celtic allocations but fans need to see one thing before they fill the gaps - Tam McManus

The usual suspects are up in arms at the decision from the Hibs board to cut the Old Firm’s tickets at Easter Road. But I don’t blame them.

It’s not just club officials who are fed up with some of the behaviour from visiting fans. I’m sure the supporters are as well. They don’t want to be taking their families to games and having to expose them to sectarian bile, flares being lit and missiles getting lobbed on to the pitch.

I’m not sure if slashing the numbers will change that overnight, but at least it might send out a message. The big hope is those extra seats are taken up by Hibs fans. We’ve seen it elsewhere. There’s been the carry on surrounding away fans at Old Firm games and also the likes of St Mirren and Kilmarnock have reclaimed their stadiums and it’s had a pretty positive reaction among their own support.

St Mirren told their fans it would cost them a whack of money to take a stand off the Old Firm. But their own crowds responded by filling the seats themselves. We want to see full stadiums. It makes for better atmospheres and you don’t want to see rows of empty seats in games on the television.

Getting the home fans on board to fill those seats is the ideal scenario. There’s one sure fire way to do it though – give them a team worth watching.

That’s the challenge for David Gray and the Hibs board right now. There have been times recently when they wouldn’t open the curtains if they were playing at the bottom of the garden, and that has to change.
