Project to build velodrome in Dublin by 2027 approved
A plan to build Ireland's first indoor cycling track in west Dublin has been given the green light by the Minister for Sport.
The 250 metre track is to be built at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Dublin and is scheduled for completion in 2027.
The project will also feature 12 badminton courts in the in-track area, and will also include spectator seating and ancillary facilities such as a gym.
Minister Catherine Martin has said the centre "will provide state-of-the-art track cycling facilities for our cycling athletes who currently have to travel abroad for both training and competition.
She added that it will also provide "the sport of badminton with a permanent home featuring integrated training, gym and medical facilities".
The Chief Executive of Sport Ireland, which oversees the National Sports Campus, has welcomed the development.
Dr Úna May described the project as "exactly the sort of continued investment that is absolutely crucial for boosting participation from grassroots levels to elite athletes".
The centre will also "enhance high-performing Irish cyclers' chances of international, Olympic and Paralympic medals in the future", Dr May added.
