Harvey Barnes sparks fresh Scotland switch optimism as Newcastle Utd star drops major hint it could be ON

Harvey Barnes has revealed he could switch allegiances to Scotland if he fails to revive his one-cap England career.

The Newcastle winger admits he has had talks over taking up his eligibility for Steve Clarke’s side. His 14 minute long England debut arrived in a friendly against Wales three years ago and he has four appearances for England U21, so still has Three Lions ambitions. But asked where his international future may lie, the 26-year-old said: “Well I’m still eligible to play for Scotland.

“There’s been one or two conversations, but there’s not been too much detail into that. To be honest, I haven’t really brought it in as part of my thought process yet. It’s not really been a serious conversation, so it’s not something I’ve really thought too much on. But I know I am still eligible to play for Scotland.”

Asked what he would do if a new chance didn’t materialise with England ahead of the World Cup qualifiers, he added: “Then I’d still be eligible to play for Scotland.” Pushed further on if the England call didn’t come he said: “Well...”

Then asked if he liked the sound of 'Harvey McBarnes', he laughed and said: “It’s something I haven’t really thought about. And I especially have been out of the picture for England for a while now, the main focus is to get back, first of all playing for Newcastle, and then see what happens.”

Scotland have qualified for the last two Euros and are in need of added attacking spark which Barnes could add. Boss Clarke said he was aware of Barnes’ eligibility but had not made an approach. FIFA’s eligibility rules say there must be a three-year gap in between a player’s last match for the country they wish to switch from.

He has returned to full fitness after five months out last season
