Go-to man Maidstone United skipper Sam Corne is a settling presence for club’s new arrivals

Maidstone captain Sam Corne has enjoyed the responsibility of helping new signings settle in.

Corne is starting his seventh season at the Stones after signing a new contract this summer.

The midfielder has seen plenty of comings and goings over the years, and that’s been the case once again.

With that comes the opportunity to work with new faces and help them find their feet. It’s a role skipper Corne takes seriously, alongside fellow long-serving player George Fowler.

“The boys who have come in, they’re good lads, good players, and I hope they settle in with ease,” said Corne.

“Me and Fowler, we try and make it as comfortable as possible, and the fans as well.

“You’ve got boys who have played against us and have played at the stadium, and boys who haven’t.

“It’s giving them an understanding of what it’s going to be like under this Maidstone umbrella and how much the fans love the club and want us to do well.

“It’s about that working-hard mentality and making sure the boys have that first and foremost, and the rest becomes easy.”

Corne held talks over a new deal towards the end of last season. He was always going to stay at a club that’s become like a second home since arriving under John Still in the summer of 2019.

Having just turned 29, he’s open to finishing his career at the Gallagher but knows that might not be down to him.

“We had conversations about a new deal at the back end of last season,” said Corne. “With the play-offs, it went on the backburner because it was such an important situation.

“Once the play-offs were over, it was just a case of getting things finalised but it was a no-brainer from my side to stay.

“Someone asked me about finishing my career here.
