Maidstone United 0 Chelmsford City 0 match report: Stones extend unbeaten start to the National League South season

Maidstone continued their unbeaten start to the National League South season with a draw against big-spending Chelmsford.

Neither side looked like breaking the deadlock in the Bank Holiday Monday heat of the Gallagher Stadium.

But five games unbeaten is certainly a positive for George Elokobi’s side and they’re still to concede a goal inside 90 minutes.

Maidstone were unchanged from the side who won 1-0 at AFC Totton on Saturday.

While that was an action-packed affair, the same couldn’t be said at the Gallagher.

Goalmouth action was in short supply at either end as both teams struggled to maintain the intensity for a second game in three days, not helped by the 25-degree heat.

Chelmsford had the one clear-cut chance of the first half, Nathan Harness with a superb reaction save after the ball sat up for Harry Barbrook in just the seventh minute.

Leo Hamblin had an effort touched over by Chris Haigh at the other end following a cross from Dajon Golding, and it was Golding who worked the City keeper at his near post after latching on to John Gilbert’s pass just before the break.

Maidstone looked to pick the pace up in the second half and went close when Deon Moore and Gilbert combined to feed Golding, who bent his strike just past the far post.

Moments later, George Fowler’s header was tipped over and midway through the half, Sam Corne went close when teed up by Golding on the edge of the box.

An unjust booking for Jephte Tanga - catching David Longe-King in the head after the City man swooped low - fired up the crowd and the team looked to respond.

But there was a let-off for Maidstone when a Jack Barham-led counter-attack came to nothing after Sam Oguntayo lost possession in midfield.
