Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth on their cautious approach with goalkeeper Ollie Wright and extending the loan of Sheffield Wednesday stopper Ashley Maynard-Brewer
Gillingham have extended the loan of Sheffield Wednesday keeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer for another week as doubts remain over Ollie Wright’s fitness.
Maynard-Brewer played for the Gills last weekend against Walsall and will keep goal again on Saturday at Fleetwood.
The Gills are close to having Wright fit for action, but manager Gareth Ainsworth doesn’t want to take any risks, particularly after seeing what happened to Armani Little last weekend.
Ainsworth was disappointed to see Little aggravate a previous injury after being put back into action too early last Saturday and doesn’t want the same to happen to his No.1 keeper.
Wright has yet to play a minute for the Gills. The 23-year-old loanee from Southampton missed the whole of pre-season and Ainsworth has turned to emergency loans over the first two games to cover the position.
Commenting on Wright this week, Ainsworth said: “Ollie’s on the grass. He's almost there.
“When Ollie Wright comes back in the team, we cannot have him breaking down again. That's something that I cannot have.”
There was frustration at seeing Little limp off on Saturday.
Little had only played 45 minutes in pre-season, appearing in the opening game at Dover, and was a surprise starter for the league game against Walsall. He lasted just half an hour.
Ainsworth said: “Armani was very disappointed on Saturday because he came in and he felt really good, he felt super, and then he had a little tweak on the injury that we've had. I don't want that. That's one of the most frustrating ones to have.
“It probably gives us a little nudge, all the staff to go, ‘let's make sure we're on it and make sure that these players, when they come back, they're super fit and they're ready for the game and the demands
