Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth believes there are better things yet to come from his League Two squad after their big win over Rochdale

Manager Gareth Ainsworth was delighted with Gillingham’s 4-1 win at Rochdale last weekend - but insists his side can get even better.

The Gills picked up their first league victory of the season in emphatic fashion, with James Brophy scoring twice and Lamin Sillah also finding the net for his first professional goal.

Gillingham are now four games unbeaten in League 2 and Ainsworth believes there is plenty more to come from his new-look side.

He said: “I’m really happy. Of course, you’re always happy after a win. What I’m even more happier about is that we can get better than that.

“We really can, and that’s a 4-1 away win. You think that’s the complete performance, but there’s so much context to it.

“Losing two players after 15 minutes [to injury] and then having to replace them, seeing spectacular goals, not having the best of the first half, but coming out and being absolutely boss in the second half.

“It was a really good away performance with, again, a travelling support that astounds me every time I see it.”

Ainsworth was particularly pleased with the contribution of his young players, with 19-year-old Logan Dobbs starting again in central defence, fellow teenager Harry Waldock continuing in midfield and 20-year-old Sillah scoring his first senior goal.

Sheldon Kendall, 18, and Jack Daley, 19, also came off the bench.

“We’ve got kids in there,” said Ainsworth. “Jack Daley’s made his first appearance. Sheldon, his second ever. I keep going on about Logan and Harry Waldock and Conor McManus (aged 22).

“These people weren’t really signed to come in the team. They’ve come in and done fantastically well.

“I’m really pleased with where we are, and we will get better. We can get better. And it’s my job to make us better.”
