Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth looks ahead to their League Two match against Rochdale

Gillingham head to Rochdale this Saturday still searching for their first win of the season.

The Gills have followed up an opening-day home defeat against Walsall with three successive draws.

Three points from a possible 12 leave the Gills towards the bottom end of League Two after the opening month of the season.

“We're definitely close,” said Gills boss Ainsworth. “We're really close. In the Walsall game we had the better chances. Northampton I think we should have won. Fleetwood, we had the better chances.

“Tuesday was probably the first game where we've gone, ‘OK, we'll take a point’.

“I'm happy with where we are. I know I'm judged on results and that's going to happen. I know that this place is in a really good place now for me.”

He added: “I want a win. I know I am four without a win. You need to win in this game so we've got to start getting them soon.”

Rochdale were promoted from the National League last season and suffered three straight defeats at the start of this one before Tuesday’s 3-0 home win over Shrewsbury.

“They’re a decent outfit,” said the Gills boss. “The jump from non-league to the league isn’t anything like it used to be. It's very close.

“I think you can see that with the teams that have come up in recent years that have really handled it well.

“This is a tough team to go to. I don't know if it's still called Spotland but if it is, that's what I remember it as. I'm telling the boys that's a tough place to go.”

Winger Jonny Smith was among the scorers for Rochdale in midweek.

His loan at the Gills last season was hampered by injury and he left Wigan earlier this summer before moving to Rochdale.
