Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth looks ahead to a League Two game at Chesterfield as the summer transfer window closes on the same night

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth is preparing for a busy Tuesday as the Gills face a long trip to Chesterfield on the same day as the summer transfer window closes.

The Gills travel to Chesterfield on Tuesday night with the deadline looming at 11pm – and Ainsworth expects the club to be making at least one more addition before the window closes.

Gillingham are still looking to strengthen their squad before the window shuts, with Ainsworth having already made sweeping changes since the end of last season.

And while the timing of deadline day is far from ideal, the Gills boss has no concerns about keeping the club’s transfer business moving while he concentrates on trying to get a result at the SMH Group Stadium.

Ainsworth plans to be surrounded by his recruitment team at the team hotel as the clock ticks down.

He said: “We've got a great recruitment team and Joe Comper and Richard Dobson will lead it up with getting everyone together on Tuesday; we won't be far apart.

“I think the intention is that we're all going to be together at the hotel just so if anything does come up we can all have a little rally round.

“I know what deadline day is like; you get the absolute curveball that you're not ready for but believe me we'll be ready and we'll see.

“We've done some really good deals [at previous clubs] on deadline day. We could get a real gem on that last day.”

Ainsworth admits he thought the window might have closed a day earlier, but accepts the situation and is confident his recruitment team can handle matters while he focuses on the match.

“I thought it might be one day earlier on the Monday night, I don't think anyone would have complained,” he said.
