Gary Neville names Marcus Rashford's best position in Manchester United team

Gary Neville reckons Marcus Rashford is better suited to playing as a central striker after starting up front again for Manchester United against Arsenal.

Rashford, 24, struggled throughout the 2021/2022 campaign and only netted five times in all competitions, but the England forward has been revived since Erik ten Hag stepped into the dugout. After impressing on the left-hand side in pre-season, Rashford has operated in a more central role this season with Anthony Martial out injured.

Both of his goals against Arsenal, though, came while he was playing off the left flank following the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo on the 58-minute mark.

Where he plays his best football has been the subject of debate for several seasons but, while his two goals against the Gunners came from the left, former United captain turned Sky Sports pundit Neville argues that was merely a reward for his earlier efforts before Cristiano Ronaldo entered the action.

While assessing Rashford and his display on The Gary Neville podcast, Neville said: "Even though his goal came from the left he's gone up top and that's where he wants to play, that's where he wants to run. On the left, he hasn't got the subtlety for the game. He relies upon space and the energy to run in behind.

"He hasn't got that inventiveness of other players that we see in the league who know the position better, who've got more technical ability on the ball. Rashford's good at running in behind people, and driving at people, and that's what has happened in the last couple of weeks. Playing centre-forward is a lot less complicated for Rashford."
