Former Aberdeen ace Lewis Ferguson says moving out of comfort zone could be key to sealing his Scotland place at Euro 2024

Lewis Ferguson reckons moving out of his comfort zone in Scotland could be key to securing his place in Steve Clarke's national squad for Euro 2024.

Midfielder Ferguson left Aberdeen for Italian Serie A side Bologna in July last year and played his second 90 minutes for his country in Tuesday night's 4-1 friendly defeat to France in Lille.

That outing came over 18 months since his first start, which was in March 2022 against Austria, but it comes at an important time as Clark begins to mull over who will make the cut for the 23-man squad in June.

The former Hamilton Accies ace, who hails from Quarter, helped the Scots qualify for next summer's tournament in Germany, featuring in the incredible 2-0 win over Spain in March that was the catalyst for a memorable and successful qualfying campaign.

Lewis has lit up Serie A, scoring seven goals during his first season, which was the highest tally by a Scottish player in Italy since the legendary Denis Law at Torino in 1961/62.

In July this year he penned a new contract amid rumoured interest from AC Milan, Juventus and reigning champions Napoli.

The 24-year-old believes it has time on the continent has been the making of him and could help his hopes of being on the plane to Germany.

He said: "I made the move because I wanted to become a better player.

"Going to that league, into a good side, training with good players every day and every week you are coming up against really good teams, for me that’s the only way to improve.

“You need to move out of your comfort zone if you want to get to the next level. I feel I’ve done that but there’s still more to come.”

Asked about his chances of being in the final squad for the Euros, he added: "I’m pretty calm about the situation.
