European titles and promotion ambitions - the EFL managers made at Manchester United

The current list of managers in English football includes several names with Manchester United connections.

Given the club’s long history of success at the highest level and the legacy of Sir Alex Ferguson, it should come as no surprise that the Reds had a role to play in shaping the next generation of coaches. However, it is not necessarily the star names that have stepped up to become managers.

Further afield, there are those that have coached at United and have since been handed the top job elsewhere. Here’s a look at the nine managers currently working in the top four divisions of English football, who have a connection to the club:

Michael Carrick

The most recently retired player on this list, Carrick was an instrumental part of United’s success during his playing days. The former midfielder remained at Old Trafford as part of Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff and was twice named caretaker boss, winning two of his three games in charge Carrick was handed his first managerial job at Middlesbrough, last October, and guided the club on a remarkable run to the play-offs but has suffered a dismal start to the new campaign.

Mark Robins

Forever remembered as the man who by all accounts saved Sir Alex’s job at United, back in 1990. Robins has been in charge of Coventry City since 2017 and has overseen the Sky Blues’ rise from League Two to the Championship play-off final, winning the EFL Trophy along the way. Will be hoping to go one step further this season.

Michael Appleton

The former midfielder made two appearances in a United shirt, back in 1996, after coming through the club’s academy. Appleton joined West Bromwich
